Interventional Radiology: New, Minimally Invasive Cancer Treatments

Interventional Radiology refines cancer diagnostics
Cancer is a constantly changing disease, and its treatment is increasingly based on precise monitoring and analysis of tissue samples. Diagnostic procedures in interventional radiology, such as ultrasound- and CT-guided biopsies, enable the collection of accurate information on the molecular and genetic characteristics of the tumor. This ensures that the patient receives the best possible chemotherapy. Biopsies are taken from both superficial and deep tissues, such as the lungs, liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
Minimally invasive treatments offer new possibilities
The development of cancer drug therapies and local treatments has brought patients more treatment options. The minimally invasive treatments offered by interventional radiology have proven to be as effective as surgical treatments in the management of small early-stage tumors. However, minimally invasive treatments are associated with a lower risk of complications and faster recovery.
Image-guided procedures
Microwave and cryoablation (cold therapy) are local treatment modalities used, for example, for liver, kidney, lung, bone, and breast tumors. Even in advanced disease, the treatment of individual metastases can be significantly beneficial for both prognosis and symptom relief.
Experienced team and multidisciplinary cooperation
Finland has long experience in image-guided minimally invasive treatments in public healthcare at university hospitals. This experience helps to accurately assess the risks and benefits associated with the procedures. Interventional radiology specialists work in close multidisciplinary cooperation with physicians from various specialties, such as oncologists, urologists, gynaecologists, abdominal surgeons, and pulmonologists. In addition, extensive international expert networks for cancer treatment are utilized. This ensures that patients can be offered the best possible treatments at all stages of the disease.
