Docrates Cancer Center expands to Stockholm: Personalized and prompt care to Swedish cancer patients

3.2.2025 Categories: Press releases
Docrates Cancer Center will open its first clinic in Sweden. Located in Stockholm, the new clinic will offer Swedish patients personalised cancer care without delay. The clinic is led by a well-known oncologist and researcher Dr Renske Altena, who previously served as a senior consultant at the Karolinska University Hospital

Founded in 2007, Docrates Cancer Center is renowned for its specialisation in diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up care of patients with cancer. It is the only private hospital of its sort in northern Europe. To date, over 2,000 Swedish patients have sought treatment at Docrates Cancer Center in Helsinki, Finland, with 40 percent coming from the Stockholm region. At the end of March 2025, Docrates Cancer Center will open a clinic in Stockholm Life Science Hub Hagastaden, located in the old Karolinska building, offering Swedish patients’ quicker access to consultations and tailored treatment plans, further strengthening its position.

– In Sweden, the number of reported cancer diagnoses is increasing every year, with breast cancer and prostate cancer being the most common cancer types. Fortunately, most cancers can be treated if diagnosed at an early stage and cancer mortality is decreasing. We have been treating Swedish patients for 15 years, and the new Stockholm clinic will provide patients with even faster access to care, as doctor consultations can be booked even for the next day, says CEO of Docrates Sweden, Jani Mikkola.

A complement to Public Healthcare

Docrates is a reliable complement to the high-standard cancer care given in the Swedish public healthcare. The new clinic offers Swedish patients personalized cancer care, including consultations with experienced oncologists, tailored treatment plans, and access to the latest advancements in oncology. These include evidence-based, cutting-edge medical treatments and therapies that reflect the rapid progress in cancer care. Patients can also receive referrals for advanced diagnostic procedures, radiation therapies, and surgical treatments, which are carried out either at Docrates’ main hospital in Helsinki or through trusted clinical partners in Sweden. Every patient is supported by a dedicated care team comprising an oncologist and a nurse. The clinic welcomes patients both with and without confirmed cancer diagnoses, and the booking for appointments at the clinic will start in March 2025.

Respected oncologist and researcher to lead the Swedish clinic

The Stockholm clinic will be led by M.D., Ph.D. Renske Altena who before joining Docrates served as a senior consultant in oncology and internal medicine at the Karolinska University Hospital for seven years. She is also an Associate Professor of Oncology at Karolinska Institute where she is actively involved in clinical research projects.

– Docrates provides its patients with world-class diagnostics and the latest medical care while maintaining a very human approach, supporting the patient every step of the way. We all know that waiting for the treatment after diagnosis can be mentally challenging, and having an opportunity to discuss about the treatment possibilities with a specialist provides needed reassurance for patients. The patients can choose to receive their entire treatment journey at Docrates, or just a part of it, such as the diagnosis or the latest evidence-based treatments that can’t be accessed yet elsewhere, says Chief Clinical Director, Dr Renske Altena.
